SAVING AND PROTECTING ANIMALS. ONE LAW AT A TIME.

The California Cruelty-Free Cosmetic Act is SAVED!

sb 1249 SAVED

VICTORY!

The “California Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Act of 2018” Saved from Federal Preemption!

In July, we sent you an alert that Congress was on the verge of erasing our hard fought protections for animals and putting countless animals’ lives in jeopardy in the process by quickly advancing S.4348, the Food and Drug Administration Safety and Landmark Advancements Act (FDASLA). At that time, we asked that you urge your senators to remove the harmful provision that would have wiped away state laws that prohibit the sale of animal-tested cosmetics, such as our landmark bill Social Compassion in Legislation cosponsored in 2018, SB 1249, the California Cruelty-free Cosmetics Act, which banned the sale of cosmetics tested on animals, and was copied and signed into law in eight other states.

Thankfully, with your help, and the leadership of the Michelson Center for Public Policy and the Physcians Committee for Responsible Medicine, we were able to get the Senate to back down on this dangerous and destructive provision! Because of YOUR voice and the advocacy efforts of Social Compassion in Legislation and our coalition, this means that California’s groundbreaking 2018 law, and similar laws on the books in eight other states, are saved!

In closely related news, the FDA Modernization Act, sponsored by Senators Booker (D) and Rand (R), passed the Senate by unanimous consent. The bill is a big step forward in ending animal testing for new drugs by encouraging the use of non-animal test methods. A huge thanks to Dr. Gary Michelson and the Michelson Center for Public Policy, and the other organizations that worked on this legislation, for their advocacy. You can read Dr. Michelson’s opinion piece on the bill HERE.

The bill now must pass the House of Representatives. We will keep you posted on future actions to support this lifesaving legislation.

This is an important reminder that all of our voices matter! If you have family or friends who also want to make their voices heard on the animal issues we are fighting for, please have them sign up for our email newsletters.

We cannot thank you all enough for the action you take for the animals! Please consider making a donation to help us continue our work.

With gratitude,
