AB 3162, The "OCTO" Act, Signed into Law by Gavin Newsom!

September 28, 2024
The law makes California the first to ban the sale of farmed octopus, and the second state (Washington) to proactively ban octopus farming. This law positions the Golden State as a humane leader on this developing issue.

LA Times Article Highlights Puppymill Laundering Problem in California

LA Times published an in-depth article on the underground market for puppy-mill bred animals. As the article shows, this kind of activity is illegal but enforcing these laws can be difficult. Perpetrators are shifty and willing to go to great lengths to continue profiteering off of cruelty.

AB 3162 and AB 1983 are officially on the Governor's desk! Call Now To Raise Support!

Governor Newsom has until September 30th to sign both into law or veto. As a reminder, AB 1983 will fund spay and neuter programs and AB 3162 will proactively ban octopus farming and the sale of farmed octopus in the state.

AB 3162 passed the full Senate with a vote of 37-0. The bill will proactively ban octopus farming and also make California the first state to ban the sale of farmed octopus.

AB 1983 passes the full Senate, head's to Governor for signature!

August 20, 2024
AB 1983 passed the full Senate with a unanimous vote of 39-0. The bill reinstates a program that allows Californians to direct a portion of their state tax refund to a program that offers grants for low- and no-cost spay and neuter services.

AB 1983, the P.E.T.S. Act, authored by Assemblymember Brian Maeinschein (D-San Diego) and sponsored by Social Compassion in Legislation, passed the Senate Revenue and Taxation Committee with a unanimous vote of 6-0.

AB 2640, The CLASS (Compassionate Advancements in Science Studies) Act, authored by Assemblymember Ash Kalra (D-San Jose) and co-sponsored by Social Compassion in Legislation, PETA, and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, passed the Senate Education Committee with a unanimous vote of 6-0.

AB 2640 Passes Assembly! Disappointing News on AB 2012 & 2133

AB 2640 (Kalra) passed out of Assembly Appropriations (coming off the suspense file) on a vote of 11-0, with the four Republicans not voting. AB 2012 (Lee) and AB 2133 (Kalra) were both held by the Appropriations Committee, meaning they have reached the end of the road and are dead.
