Today, AB 1999, authored by Assemblymember Ash Kalra (D-San Jose), and cosponsored by Social Compassion in Legislation, the California Veterinary Medical Board, the California Veterinary Medical Association, and San Diego Humane Society passed the full Assembly with an initial unanimous vote of 63 to 0.

Many of you know, but as a reminder, California voters passed a historic proposition in 2018, Prop 12. It is a landmark animal welfare law that establishes minimum space requirements for breeding pigs, veal calves, and egg-laying hens. The bad news: the proposed Farm Bill, which is only voted on every 5 years, has language that the pork industry wants in it! It will be voted on next week! We are happy to report that, yesterday, AB 2344 (Haney), which we have named the Justice for Seized Animals Act, passed the Assembly Public Safety Committee with a unanimous vote of 9-0. We are thrilled to share that yesterday, after intense advocacy by SCIL, a broad coalition of both American and Australian animal protection organizations, and your calls and letters, SB 1212 (Jones) was voted down by the Senate Natural Resources and Water Committee.
