AB 2640, The CLASS (Compassionate Advancements in Science Studies) Act, authored by Assemblymember Ash Kalra (D-San Jose) and co-sponsored by Social Compassion in Legislation, PETA, and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, passed the Senate Education Committee with a unanimous vote of 6-0.

Sacramento, Calif., May 23, 2024 - Today, AB 2640, The CLASS (Compassionate Advancements in Science Studies) Act, authored by Assemblymember Ash Kalra (D-San Jose) and co-sponsored by Social Compassion in Legislation, PETA, and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, passed the full Assembly with a vote of 53-to-0.

AB 2640 (Kalra) passed out of Assembly Appropriations (coming off the suspense file) on a vote of 11-0, with the four Republicans not voting. AB 2012 (Lee) and AB 2133 (Kalra) were both held by the Appropriations Committee, meaning they have reached the end of the road and are dead.

On Monday, AB 3162, authored by Assemblymember Steve Bennett (D-Santa Barbara) and cosponsored by Social Compassion in Legislation and Animal Legal Defense Fund, passed the full Assembly with a vote of 51-10!

AB 3053 will ensure that, in the rare instances where a 4H/FFA family wants to spare their animal's life, or a winning bidder wants to pick up the animal alive, they can do so without the legal drama and emotional trauma others have experienced in the past.
