Today, AB 416 the Deforestation-Free Procurement Act passed the full Senate with a vote of 30 to 8. Earlier this year, the bill was introduced by Assemblymember Ash Kalra (D-San Jose) along with co-sponsors, Social Compassion in Legislation, Friends of the Earth, and Peace 4 Animals.

Today, AB 1282 the California Pet Blood Bank Modernization Act, passed the full Senate with a unanimous vote. The bill, which was introduced earlier this year by authors Assemblymember Richard Bloom (D- Santa Monica) and Senator Scott Wilk (R-Santa Clarita) and led by Social Compassion in Legislation, aims to bring transparency and oversight to animal blood banks in California by allowing community blood banks and phasing out captive-closed colonies.

AB 1282 (Bloom/Wilk), the California Pet Blood Bank Modernization Act, will have its fate determined by the Senate Appropriations Committee next Thursday, August 26th.

AB 416(Kalra), the California Deforestation-free Procurement Act, will be voted on in the Senate Appropriations Committee this week.

SCIL sponsored bill highlights connection between protecting animals and solving climate change

Today, a Sacramento Bee article, titled “‘Liquidation of cows.’ How the drought creates chaos on California ranches, dairy farms,” highlights the effects of California’s extreme drought on the state’s cattle and dairy industries.

The California State Legislature is on summer recess until August 16th. Until then, we will be advocating for our sponsored legislation with legislative and committee staff. Bills will come up for votes soon after the session reconvenes. We will also be keeping up with the latest animal and environmental issues.

Today, AB 1282 (Bloom/Wilk), the Pet Blood Bank Modernization Act, passed the Senate Business, Professions & Economic Development Committee with a unanimous vote.
